8 cr urbanites fall under poverty line'

 

A total of 807.60 lakh people in urban areas of India are living below the poverty line, the government said today. Replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja said, "As per Tendulkar Committee Estimates of Poverty, the estimated number of urban people living below poverty line is 807.60 lakh." The national poverty line for urban areas at 2004-05 is Rs 578.80 per capita per month and at daily rate the figure comes to Rs 19.29, she said. On measures taken to provide gainful employment to unemployed and under-employed poor, Selja said, "The Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation is implementing scheme of Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojna (SJSRY) aimed to provide gainful employment to urban unemployed and under-employed poor." The government has recently launched a new scheme, Rajiv Awas Yojna (RAY), for slum dwellers and urban poor aimed at providing support to states that are willing to provide property rights to slum dwellers, she informed the House.

unbelievable....

Recently, there's a disheartening report in the US, Americans below poverty line is highest number since records began.  More and more Americans are giving up their fight to stave off poverty in a tenaciously stubborn economy. American's are now existing beneath the poverty threshold than ever before since the bureau started maintaining the record in 1959. The trick is truly defining what is considered poverty. IMO, it is not so much about income. I might be considering myself poor, if I had no good free medical care, good urban that lets me live without a car etc..
