8 character tds certificate number ?

Dear Sir,

The Excel utilities provided by Income-Tax require 8 character TDS Certificate Numbers to be filled in (In Table 24 -TDS Form 16-A), whereas the TDS Certificate Numbers mentioned in the Forms 16-A provded by the deductors mention the Certificate Number in 6 characters. If this six character Certificate number is filled in the E-filing utility, it gives error in generating Xml file. This also does not work if the remaining two characters are filled by spaces. Leaving the field of Certificate Number Blank, however, works. Then what is the significane of this field in the Table 24 in the e-filing utility ?

Apparently, banks need to provide the 8 character TDS certificate number (different from the 6 character unique ID for Form 16A), which they may do from FY 2012-13. Until then, it is recommended to leave the field blank.
