(nri) my income tax: foreign employer and salary in usd

Tax queries 255 views 2 replies

Dear All,

I am NRI & I was living outside India for 17 years. From 1 - April -2016, I moved to India temporarily as I plan to migrate to another new country by end of 2016. In Summary my total stay in India is from April 2016 ~  until end of November 2016.

In India, I am working as a consultant for foreign based consultancy service. I am working as contractor for that company. I am not employee for that company. They pay my professional fee in USD. I receive that fee in my Indian NRI bank account every month.

Do I need to pay the tax for this income? What is my residential status from April 2016 till November 2016?

Thank you.

Hello Yogeshji

Note that Income earned and received in India is taxable in India. As you are giving consultancy from India your income is taxable in India.

the income you derived in india during temporary stay is taxable in india irrespective of your residential status. it is so because the income accrue and arise in india and received in india...
