An Act to amend and codify the law relating to adoptions and maintenance among Hindus.
BE it enacted by Parliament in the Seventh Year of the Republic of India as follows:-
CHAPTER IPRELIMINARYShort title and extent1. (1) This Act may be called the Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act, 1956.(2) It extends to the whole of India [***].
1. Dated 21-12-1956.Act has been extended to Dadra and Nagar Haveli by Regulation 6 of 1963.
2. Words "except the State of Jammu and Kashmir" omitted by the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, dated 9-8-2019, w.e.f. 31-10-2019.
