Mobile Number Portability or MNP allows a subscriber of any mobile phone service provider to switch to any other service provider without changing the mobile number. The number is ported to the new mobile servicer provider. 


Finally, after a long wait mobile number portability has been finally launched in India on 19th January 2011, empowering consumers to change service providers conveniently.

Following are the answers to some of the queries you might have:

Does mobile number portability allows to switch technology as well ?
Yes, the subscriber can either choose to stay with the same technology, change from GSM to CDMA or vice-versa. Mobile Portability is available for both post-paid and prepaid subscribers.

How long does it take to switch the service provider ?
Seven working days in general and fifteen working days in Jammu & Kashmir and North-east.

Does it cost anything ?
It costs Rs 19, which is to be collected by the new Service Provider.

Can I apply for Number Portability in another city ?
No, you can't change your circle.

How to switch mobile operator under Mobile Number Portability ?
  • SMS PORT  <mobile number> to 1900
  • You'll receive an SMS containing an alphanumeric code and expiry date for it. This is unique porting code.
  • Approach service provider you wish to switch to with the Unique Code you received along with Photographs, Address Proof and Identity Proof. Feel an application form and complete the necessary formalities required by the new service provider. Complete this process within the expiry date that came with a unique code.
  • Operator will take request to mobile portability clearing house. Clearing house will do the needful to deactivate your number from existing service provider and activate new one.
  • You will get a text message from new provider mentioning date and time when your phone will go through no-service period, which will be appx 2 hours.
  • This is when switching will actually happen and your phone will be out of use for couple of hours between 12pm and 5am.
