what is demat account?

demat account is the account in which we hold securities(i.e. shares, mutual funds, debentures , fd etc) in electronic form . demat account can be opened under any Depository participants(e.g. Karvy. Kotak. ICICI, HDFC,PNB, Indiabulls etc tec.).In india there are two depositories that is NSDL & CDSL .Under these depositories there are many depository participants.

Point to be noted is that if we open account under NSDL then there is EIGHT DIGITS Client ID & there is also a DP ID. of your depository participant & if we open account under CDSL the there is SIXTEEN DIGITS Client ID
