Is there anywhere I can download sample data for Tally? I want to learn how various (payment, journal, contra, receipt etc.) entries are made and appropriate headings for ledgers etc.

Even if you download the tally information, you cannot succeed. I can suggest you. Visit tally office take one day training in that institute. You can learn in a half day everything.
