Refund claimed in original return

Hi. My friend has filed ITR for FY 10-11 claiming refund. Later he found a rectification and filed a revised return. However he received a refund cheque that was claimed in original return which is short of revised refund sum.

Could any one please suggest -

a) Should he encash the received refund sum that is short and write to assessing officer to process another refund to the extent of differential sum or

b) Return back the original refund cheque and appeal to officer for processing the entire revised refund claimed in revised return.

If you have filed the Return Online than i must suggest you to approach CPC. You can do so by phone only which is one of the convenient option. However if you have submitted the return offline than firstly call Aaykar Sampark Kendra and if it fails to provide solution than you may need to approach AO

However i think you must redeem that cheque because cancellation of 1 cheque and issue of new one is complicated process at ITD. ITD will issue the cheque for the remaining balance.
