Query about EPFO account not earning interest

Others 236 views 1 replies

Friends,

I relocated to USA in 2017   and I just noticed that my EPFO account has stopped earning interest from 2022. There is no more employee or employer contribution. Please can you let me know when EPFO stops earning interest in the above circumstances.

Thank You

Sunder

Hi Sunder,

This is a common situation for individuals who have relocated abroad and no longer contribute to their EPFO (Employees' Provident Fund Organisation) account in India.

🔍 Here's what happens with your EPF account when it becomes inactive:

✅ Interest Rules for Inactive EPF Accounts:

  1. Before Nov 2016 Rule Change:
EPF accounts with no contributions for 36 months (3 years) were considered "inoperative" and stopped earning interest.

  2. After Nov 2016 Rule Change (Current Rule):
As per the EPFO notification dated November 11, 2016, interest continues to be credited to inactive accounts (i.e., accounts without contributions), until the account holder turns 58 years of age.

So even if you're not contributing anymore (since 2017), the account should continue to earn interest until you reach 58, unless:

    • You have withdrawn the full amount.

    • Or the account has become "inoperative" due to other reasons (e.g., PAN/Aadhaar mismatch, death of the account holder, etc.).

⚠️ Possible Reasons Your EPF Account Stopped Earning Interest in 2022:

  • Incorrect KYC: Missing or mismatched PAN/Aadhaar/bank details can block interest credit.

  • System Issues: Sometimes interest is credited later — typically in the next financial year.

  • Account closed/inoperative due to age: Unlikely if you're younger than 58.

  • Technical Glitch or Unupdated Passbook: The passbook may not be showing the most recent interest even though it has been credited.

✅ What You Can Do:

  1. Check Passbook on EPFO Portal:
Login to https://www.epfindia.gov.in → 'Our Services' → 'For Employees' → 'Member Passbook'.

  2. Raise a Grievance Online:
    Use the EPFO Grievance Portal:
    https://epfigms.gov.in/
Submit a grievance with your UAN, mention your concern about missing interest from 2022.

  3. Update KYC if Needed:
Even from abroad, you can update Aadhaar, PAN, and bank details via the UAN portal if needed.

  4. Contact Regional EPFO Office:
You may also contact the regional office handling your EPF account for confirmation.

Summary:

Your EPF account should earn interest until you are 58, even without contributions. If interest has stopped since 2022, it could be due to KYC issues or technical errors — it’s best to raise a grievance to get it clarified.
