Notice for Income Escaping

One of my friends got a notice from department for Cash deposited around 13 lacs during A.Y. 2011-12 seeking explanation why the said amount should not be treated as Income? He is an Airforce Staff. No return was filed in that A.Y., however TDS was deducted on the salary.

But the Issue is, tha due date for reply has gone and my friend send an email explaining the said cash as money deposited by his sister for buying land which is true but upon advise from a person he sent an online reply as well explaining the cash deposited as accumulated savings.

Now, He is scared to get an other notice from department for tax demand or something. Can any one explain what are the possibilities in this particular case?

Tons of heartly thanks in advance.

It is not mentioned in your query whether the notice has summoned your friend to appear in person to the Office of A.O.

If yes,
Even if date has gone, it is Strong recommend to appear before A.O. with all the available supporting documents and information that is sufficient to prove the fact.
