'Bill to change ICWAI name to be introduced in Parliament'

Thrissur (Kerala): A bill to change the name of Institute of Cost and WorksAccountants of India (ICWAI) to Cost and Management Institute of India would soon be introduced in Parliament, ICWAI President G N Venkataraman said here on Friday.

He told reporters here that the minister concerned has given an assurance in this regard.

He said the name change would eliminate the disadvantage faced by Indian professional accountants, who despite being cost and management accountants, are treated as 'works' accountants abroad.

Earlier, he inaugurated the two-day All-Kerala Cost Convention, attended by nearly 300 delegates.

The government on Thursday said cost accounting body ICWAI can change its name to Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of India [ Images ].

"We have in-principle allowed ICWAI to change its name to Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of India (ICMAI). Some statutory changes will be required. We are working on it. Hopefully in the near future it will be done," Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said.

Set up in 1959 through an Act of Parliament, ICWAI has over 47,000 members and two lakh students. It has been requesting for the change of name for long.

Khurshid said cost accountants would no longer need to feel like the "younger cousins" of chartered accountants, as in times to come, cost accountants would have a larger role to play in the corporate world.

"We are not just cost accountants, helping companies keep record of things, we assist them to manage costs. We also analyse how well resources are utilise in the process of producing something. So our role is much bigger," ICWAI president G N Venkatraman said.

The world over, he said, cost and works practitioners are known as cost management accountants.

Cost accounting bodies world-over use the term cost management to represent them, including in countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan, he added.

Gone are the days were cost accountants were engaged to know the cost only. With the help of the computers; the work is done on line.

What types of reports are required for cost management i.e. cost ascertainment, cost control, and cost reduction.

In recession, practical use of cost accountancy have proved very helpful.

Cost accountants are now not sitting in works.

They visits works of course; but for a different purpose.

The industry which runs with crores of rupees; have utilized the services of cost accountants in a great manner.

Previously cost accounting was a legal requirement only. Now a days it is required for all.

In many of the cases it is experienced that ICWAI trainees are immediately absorbed by the companies the moment they get qualified as ICWAI.
