Dear All,

Through this post I would like to raise the issue of Farmer’s suicide in our agriculture oriented country. Considering the fact that agriculture plays an important role in the overall economy of India, the issue of Farmer’s suicide is indeed a black spot on the global image of India.

I would also like to draw your kind attention towards poor living conditions of Indian farmers. This poor living conditions and struggle to survive is forcing farmer’s them to opt for suicide. This is indeed a very sad state of affair for all of us.

It will be a shock for all of us to know that this gloom has become deeper over the past few years and presently more than 20 states are facing this big issue. There is no control on this situation and this problem of suicide is steadily rising suicidal graph.

There is one Government agency titled National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) which collects data for various purposes. According to the report of NCRB in last 16 years i.e. from 1995 to 2010, more than 2,50,000 farmers have committed suicide. Another shocking and political fact is our minister and political leaders have consistently restricts themselves from quoting the figures revealed by NCRB as the same confession from political partiesmay be dangerous to his political goal and career.

According to me we all are mature enough to understand the gift of farmers in our lives and Indian economy and they will always remain important in our lives. It is high time for all of us to take note of this serious problem and sad state of affair and do something constructive whenever provided with a useful chance. Please note this quote "If you haven't woken up yet, now is the time."

The figures above may differ based on different researches but the same is irrelevant as long as we understand the seriousness of this issue. You can get some more info from google.

now its a bitter fact, many farmers migrating to cities as construction labours, or to find some other way to survive, they have left with no option.., Today's modern living ways causing dramatic changes in seasons.. which is affecting crops and yields.., and the major thing is.. its a toughest job for farmers to get a crop loan from bank,, as I personally seen many bank officials will be more interested in sanctioning loans to sound farmers and the one who is in real need of finds have to make rounds to bank everyday.. Though govt makes new schemes, but they become sucessful when authorities implement them, we are enjoying by the grace of farmers, but their hopes never been yielded fruits..:(, Unless humanity rises in our hearts, we will be utmost risk of loosing our food providers...:(

@ Harini

I am truly glad to see your personal views and guts to post a responsible reply.

You have rightly pointed out farmer’s migration issue as that migration of farmers from their native place to cities as labours is also very heartbreaking thing. We can easily experience their feeling if circumstances put us in such situation where we have to leave our loved ones and native place for the sake of survival.sad

Ankur sir you have been post on very burning issue..i.e Farmer suicide. you are absolutely right that it is worst thing in INDIA which is Agricultural country.. But i would like to say that not only farmer, government system or political parties are responsible for this suicides. Environmental issue is also responsible.. Many acres of land is not under agricultural area due to unavailability of water and basic resources, that's way farmer migrating as a farmer to worker.

Thanks Hemant for sharing your opinion.

It is a fact that by the genuine and honest efforts of our Government this horrible situation can be managed to a certain extent. In the recent past Government has come up with some farmer friendly policies but the execution and implementation of these policies is still very poor. Due to this farmers are not getting the real benefit of these policies. Something constructive should be done on the part of Government to ensure reach of these Governmental policies to the poor and needy farmers.

Exactly... there are lot of provisions making for agriculture sector in every budget.. all schemes and benefits are made on paper and very less amount reach to poor farmer and needy farmer.

thanks for   raising this  issue.. approxiatemate 70% of our country population is based on agriculture sector. there are maily two types of farmers in villages

rich or big farmers ( those who occupy lots of land & earning huge income  even 10,00,000 or more yearly)

poor or small farmers( those who  occupy small piece of land or have no piece of land just working as labour under rich farmers)

rich farmers never facing big problem of related to money.

problem only faced  by small farmers  like education of their children, health related problems, how to pay loan interest  which are taken from big farmers & banks.

every one know there is low return in agriculture how will they pay interest & thats the biggest reason of suicide.

LOAN+INTEREST+LOAN+ INTEREST.................= SUICIDE

we can solve their problem by providing proper education & start industry in villages & other government incentives like maintaing proper minimum support price of crops.

if they get job of 10000 to 15000 in industry than they can able to provide education to their childrens &  maintain their life. haryana is biggest example for other states.

TATA FAMILY

RELIANCE FAMILY

IF THEY BOTH COME FORWARD AND INVEST IN AGRICULTURE AS ONE OF THEIR MAIN BUSINESS

MEANS..AGRICULTURE SECTOR GLITTERS

The bankers are more than happy to restructure loans of corporates like Kingfisher, Suzlon and other corporates. As goes the saying "Jiski lathi uski bhains"

By and large Migrant workers are working as contract labours/casual labours with very little pay and no social security benefits and no job security either. This further leads to labour related problems as was seen in Maruti and Honda Plants.

In all these the beneficiaries are the ones who are contractors and who employe contract labour - in other words the middlemen. Even with better crops, farmers are at the mercy of middlemen.

Have you ever noticed the people employed at malls who are responsible for housekeeping and cleaning..Most of them are young brigade about 25-30 years in age. These would probably be migrants who are happy with meagre salary in the cities. Though India has the largest proportion of young population, the resources are being wasted and grossly so.

p.s - The comment may not be directly related to farmer's suicide, but remotely does have  a link to poor quality of life in the village.

News in relation to the current topic as said by pranab mukherjee.....

“Growth in the agriculture sector was 3.7% in 11th Plan compared to 2.4% in 10th Plan,”

these shows that the hard efforts of Farmers has an larger impact on economy as well as GDP.

If my stats are right, 70% of Indians depend on agriculture, while its contribution to GDP is abt 15%. So, there is clearly disguised unemployement in agriculture sector (& I have seen it myself in villages). We need to take these disguisedly unemplyement people out of agriculture towards more productive sectors. Even by doing this, there will be negligible effect on agriculture production & it will generate additional income for the family as well as nation.

For this, firstly we need to improve two basic facilities in villages. Number one, Education and secondly, connectivity. Even though, Governments have opened schools within reach of almost every Indian, but the quality of education imparted there (if any) is pathetic. I hope Govt. instead of just pumping in more money will look at the end result too.

As regards connectivity, it can be divided into 2 parts: Physical connectivity & Virtual connectivity. We need to connect villages to the near-by cities & towns by not just better roads, but also good & safe means of public transport. Central & State Govts. have been pumping lots of money here too, but the problem of corruption remains to be addressed. Virtual connectivity also plays a vital role, as it bridges the information & opportunity gap between urban & rural India.

One more issued which needs to be addressed is Mental Block. I have seen many people in villages having mental block as reagrds going to cities or working in factories.  But I hope this issue will be automatically resolved, when these people will see the changes around them.

So, what I mean is that we should work for upliftment of farmers & not just upliftment of agriculture, because better human resource is a bigger asset than better land.

Thank you Ankur Sir for the post. It is indeed a serious problem....India is self-sufficient in food-grains...farmers play a very important role...the high suicide rates are a shame to the nation....so many families suffer...you are right...the poor living conditions and the pressure of repaying the loan sharks kills them.
