Discrepancy between form 16a and 26AS

TDS 1753 views 7 replies

My bank has given me a Form 16A which shows interest paid as Rs. 1,00,000 and TDS of Rs. 10,000.

However, when I check my 26AS statement online , it shows the Bank has paid me Rs. 2,00,000 as interest and paid GOI Rs. 20,000

The Form 16A is correct at least with regards to the interest paid by me.

Since I fall in the 30% tax bracket, I have to pay additional tax on my income from Other Sources. So can anyone advice me what to do ?

1. Claim 1,00,000 as Income and TDS of 10,000 and file accordingly ?

2. Claim 2,00,000 as Income and TDS of  20,000 and file accordingly ?

3. Claim 1,00,000 as Income and TDS of  20,000 and file accordingly ?

Also does anyone know where to file a complaint.

Check your bank statement. Check the date of credit in 26AS. Check the year in 26AS.

I have checked - all are valid and for FY2010-11. It seems Bank has reported someone else's income as my income while filing. The bank made a clerical error in entering the PAN number.

visit the bank and get clarification , ask them to revise the tds return,

how ever you have to claim as per TDS certtificate in hand ( which is actual)

Just confirm following steps :

1) Verify your Bank Statement for that F.Y. about the interest amount credited in to your account. and confirm your self that it is correct amount or not.

2) if it is interest on your Fixed Deposit then ask the Banker to issue Interest statement for that period and also verify the same with your Bank statement given earlier and with Form 16A issued to you.

3) take a print of 26AS from the site.

4) confirm yourself what is correct and what is wrong.

5) if Rs.1, 00, 000 /- is correct as per Bank statement, interest statement & and form 16A then you inform the bank about this (so that you wont get any notices from IT Department as income showed less and tax paid less like that )

if there is wrong on bank side they will issue correct Form 16A and you can file your return accordingly.

6) it is advisable to follow your Form 16A to file your IT Returns.

Hurry up its 20th July today. Last date is 31st of this month.

Thanks Pavan and Sharma.

The delay in filing return is because of this bank messup.

I have verified that the Form 16A supplied by the Bank is indeed correct.

I have been asking the bank to give me in writing that they made an error in the 26AS filing and they are constantly postponing.

Hence, I was asking where to file a complaint regarding this .

i hope the following link can help you in this regard.

"Ombudsman Scheme" is a very effective one. you will really suprise with the reaction. i didnt have the contact no. but you can do one thing you can found the  details regarding this scheme and toll free no. in any ATM.

First discuss with your banker for the last time and if no +ve result then dont think to launch complaint with Ombudsman.

as your claim for TDS is lesser than 26AS display, step ahead to file your return with your correct data. NSDL/ Bank will take initiative at later date to correct the same, but for that reason only, you dont have to delay in your own return.
