DIN is Director Identification Number. It is a number givren to the respective directors their respective companies by Income Tax Dept.
Its not given by the Income tax department, its allotted to Directors by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
It is an unique Identification Number allotted to an individual who is an existing director of a company or intends to be appointed as director of a company pursuant to section 266A & 266B of the Companies Act, 1956 (as amended vide Act No 23 of 2006).

No company shall appoint or reappoint any individual as a director unless he has been allotted DIN (Director Identification Number) u/s 266 B.
