Tax queries 595 views 1 replies

My mother who is a senior citizen got both her knee replaced this financial year. We spent Rs.5 lacs for the said operation, without taking any mediclaim support.Pls. tell me

1) if knee replacement falls under 80dd, "locomotor disability". I am not clear about this. I fall under 20%  tax bracket.

2)If yes, then what documents I need to submit to my employer.

3) Also if I get a lumpsum deduction in this year also, then what deduction I can claim in future regarding the maintainence and what documents are needed.

Pls. advise

Dear, U/s 80DD it's provided that if any expenditure is incurred for the medical treatment of handicapped dependent, assessee can claim deduction of Rs. 50K or Rs. 1 lacs(if disabilty above 80%). So you can take deduction u/s 80DD provided you produce a certificate from Government Hospital that the dependent is disabled mentioning the degree of disability and a declaration showing the amount spent for the rehabilitation of the dependent. --- Regards -- KRISHNA
