I dont have any idea on VAT can you please suggest me good books which will give me an overview of VAT and help anwering client questions

Each state / UT has their own set of VAT laws. You need to first ascertain, which states you are operate in, then you may refer to the VAT law of these states. VAT is applicable on purchases and sales within a state. CST is applicable on inter state purchase and sale of goods.
