Burning desire to be beautiful

A bride-to-be has been left with second-degree burns and scarring just weeks before her dream wedding after laser hair removal treatment in Dubai.

Within minutes of the session on her underarms at Moksha Salon in Oud Metha, devastated Mona Amin realised something had gone horribly wrong when she felt as though “fire was spreading across” her.

When she consulted dermatology experts they found the 26-year-old had sustained second-degree burns in 39 strips across both armpits.

Amin, who is due to marry fiance Brian D’Sousa on January 29, said: “I had already had one session and although there had been a little discomfort, I knew this time was different. I was jerking and kept saying I thought the intensity was too high, but the technician told me it was fine and not to worry.”

Amin’s agony was judged so severe, she was put on morphine. “At that point, I was in so much pain, I just wanted them to do whatever they could to stop it,” she said. She has been told her scars will last for up to 12 months and corrective treatment will be needed.

“I am having a white gown wedding and, with my dress, the scars will be there. But I can’t postpone it. I will have to use make-up to cover them,” she added.

Amin bought a voucher from a daily deals website and went for her second treatment on December 23.

Just 24 hours later, another woman went for the same package on her mouth and chin and was also burnt.

The salon was fined for not having a licence to perform laser treatment. But boss Ujala Ali Khan said: “Laser removal is an invasive treatment and there are number of reasons why there might be a skin reaction. All our clients are warned of this.”

SALON TO PAY FOR MEDICAL EXPENSES

She added: “More than 200 people bought the voucher and in fact we turned away five or six people because they were not suitable candidates.

“I don’t know what the reason was in these cases. I have had the machines checked in case there was a mechanical problem and they are working fine. “I take the responsibility for any extra expense incurred by the women within guidelines agreeable to both parties. I will not wash my hands of that.”

The second woman who was badly burned said: “The first two sessions were fine but on the third, I thought it was too much.
“When it was finished, I knew I had been burned but they kept saying it would be okay if I put cream on. Of course, it wasn’t,” added the 30-year-old, who wears a mask to try to hide her injuries.

Amin has reported her case to the police and both women have complained to Dubai Municipality, which sent inspectors to the parlour and slapped it with fines.

Ali Khan said the burns are a possible side affect of the procedure and customers sign a disclaimer.

However, doctors say second-degree burns are not caused by a mere reaction to the treatment although they do warn the therapy is not without risk.

Ali Khan insists such incidents are rare.

She said the municipality has not given her any information on how to rectify the licence issue despite her trying to apply for six months. Dubai Police are also investigating the matter.
