Appointment of CEO & MD at the same time

As per Section 203(1) of the Companies Act, 2013,

Every company belonging to such class or classes of companies as may be prescribed* shall have the following whole-time key managerial personnel,—
(i) managing director, or Chief Executive Officer or manager and in their absence, a whole-time director;

*Every listed company and every other public company having a paid-up share capital of ten crore rupees or more.

Hence either of 1 of MD/CEO/Manager/WTD is mandatory for prescribed cos. But you can voluntarily appoint, there is no restriction.

Coming to your question, if you mean whether you can appoint same person as CEO & MD at the same time, then yes there is no restriction on the same though it is redundant. Or alternatively, if you are asking whether Company can appoint a CEO & a MD at the same time, then answer then also is yes, they can.

Both are different positions. So same person can't be be appointed as CEO and MD.

Practically MD works from operational point of view where as CEO does from administrative point of view

No Person can be appointed as CEO & MD of company subject to compliance of Section 196,197,198 and rules made thereunder ,If CEO is an officer of company then it will be separate position for which DIR 12 will be filed with board resolution,but when Director is designated as CEO he will be covered under above provision read with section 203 ( for listed and Qualified Public company ) ...CEO and MD both having same kind of duties ,to involve in Day to day operational task..
