X'S RETURN HAD BEEN FILED; BUT ITS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT WAS NOT SENT TO CPC.
IT WAS A REFUND CASE. WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE NOW??
I GUESS AN APPLICATION NEEDS TO BE GIVEN..... BUT TO WHOM???

You can try this:
Send the acknowledgement to CPC now along with application to condone the delay. Application should be addressed to Asst. CIT - CPC.
IF CPC acknowledges the receipt of return its fine but if not, I think you have to file revised return with no change in data and then send the ack. in time.
If 120 days period with extension if any, have lapsed, the assessee has to file a revised return, the revised return will be considered as original return.
no need to worry just send acknowledgement to CPC,
