My wife spent 21 lakhs in FY 2022-23 on her cancer treatment. This amount was for surgery, radiation and several chemo therapy sessions , all of which happened at different times during the year and for each a separate insurance claim was raised. She got 15 lacs (upto the sum insured) from the insurer for some of the claims but there were some claim, amounting to 6 lakhs, which were not reimbursed as the sum insured had exhausted. Is she eligible to claim 80DDB exemption of 40k on the 6 lakhs that she had to spend from her own pocket?
