80 d mediclaim

22 November 2013 Dear Sirs and friends,

One of my friends have paid mediclaim for himself wife and his children Rs. 25,000/- (i.e. 18000 for Self, Rs. 7000 for Spouse and Children) he himself is a senior citizen. He has also paid Rs 18000 for the mediclaim of his Father and 15000 for his mother (both of them are Senior citizen) how much deduction can he claim in 80D. I think he can claim Rs. 40,000/- deduction, Please correct me if i am wrong.

23 November 2013 The Deduction that can be claimed under Sec. 80D at the time of filing of income tax return is the sum of the following:-

1)In case the payment of medical insurance premium is paid by the assesse for himself, spouse, dependent children – Rs. 15000. In case, the person insured is a Senior Citizen, the deduction allowed should be Rs. 20,000
2)In case the payment of medical insurance premium is paid by the assesse for parents, whether dependent or not – Rs. 15000. In case the parents of the Assessee are Senior Citizens the deduction is allowed under Section 80D should be Rs. 20,000 In This Case Total Deduction would be Rs 40,000/-(20,000 for himself , Spouce and Children. and Rs 20,000/-For parents.
