Certificate in Financial Engineering and Risk Management (CFERM)

The High Powered Expert Committee (Percy Mistry Committee) on making Mumbai an International Financial Centre (IFC) has argued that there is need for creating a specialized programme that combines the teaching of high-level quantitative financial economics, advanced mathematics, complex modelling and computer science in an academic centre of excellence close to Mumbai which result in a steady stream of graduates to populate the IFC and to replenish its human capital base with regularity.

NISM, through its School for Securities Education (SSE), tries to fill this void by offering a six-month duration certificate programme in the field of Financial Engineering and Risk Management. NISM's "Certificate in Financial Engineering and Risk Management (CFERM)" programme would integrate theory with applications to quantitative finance. It provides the right blend of theory and applications, addressing context as well as content. The objective of this Programme is to match the right talent with the experienced theoreticians and practitioners and serve the financial markets with a batch of well-trained financial engineers.

Selected candidates with the right aptitude are put through various modules, from the initial grounding to advanced concepts and applications. Exposure is provided to the theoretical aspects, practical applications as well as skill development through cases, dissertation, seminars and lab simulations. At the end of the programme, the participants will be well-versed in the contemporary aspects of financial engineering and also would have gained product design capabilities. This programme is differentiated on account of the practical inputs and skill development aspects woven in. The Programme is also unique in the way it addresses the past problems and how Financial Engineering needs to look at appropriateness (suitability) while avoiding the pitfalls of over-engineering (transparency).
