ICSI Celebrates 48th CS Day

Derek O’Brien, MP, Rajya Sabha & Leader, All India Trinamool Congress Inaugurates 48th CS Day at Kolkata

The Institute of Company secretaries of India (ICSI) celebrated its 48th CS Day on 4th October, 2016 at Kolkata. To mark the occasion a mega programme was organised at Gorky Sadan Auditorium.

Shri Derek O’Brien, Hon’ble MP, Rajya Sabha & Leader, All India Trinamool Congress Parliamentary Party graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Shri Dwarika Prasad Tantia, Chairman GPT Infra Projects Ltd, Shri Sajan Kumar Bansal Managing Director Skipper Ltd and Shri Sajjan Bhajanka Chairman Century Plyboards (I) Ltd, were the Guests of Honour.

In his inaugural address, Shri Derek O’ Brien congratulated ICSI on its 48th CS Day and said that Company Secretaries over the years have made a mark for themselves in economic development of the country through evolving standards of Corporate Governance and compliance. He said that he firmly believes that CS as "Key Managerial Personnel" provides outstanding leadership, credibility and transparency in the corporate world.

While giving away awards to All India Toppers of CS June 2016 examinations, he said that, “The whole world is changing in all the spheres at a mind boggling speed. In this transformational and disruptive environment, he believes, that the best gift any Institution can give to its students is the ability to understand this very basic nature of change so that they are well prepared for the future”.

In his special address, Shri Dwarika Prasad Tantia said that Companies Act 2013 has shifted the paradigm and now gives multidimensional Role to Company Secretaries in the field of Statutory audit, Liquidations, Secretarial Standards, Secretarial Audit, framework for amalgamation and mergers and he emphasized that, “the need of the hour is to ensure righteousness”.

Shri Sajan Kumar Bansal, Managing Director Skipper Ltd also addressed the august gathering and stated that Companies Act, 2013 has given a new set of duties and Challenges to Company Secretaries. The Company Secretaries will adorn high offices of Board of Directors of Companies and also get into the key aspects, operations of the company and then contribute to the decisions. “The Company Secretaries are the first and the last line of defence in the battle of ensuring good corporate Governance in Corporate World”, he said.

Congratulating the Institute and the students, Shri Sajjan Bhajanka, Chairman Century Plyboards (I) Ltd, said, “The ICSI has constantly added value by incorporating the best business and technical practices and philosophies to bridge the gap between education through books and the practical realities of the outside world so that the students are fully equipped to deliver their best”.

CS Mamta Binani, President, ICSI, while addressing the august gathering in her Presidential address on the 48th CS Day, said that, “Foundation Day of an organisation is a significant date in every organisation and for an organisation like ICSI it is all the more important, as it depicts the journey which started as small steps and now has traversed long distances. She also stated that Foundation day of a Professional Institute like ICSI is not only an occasion to rejoice. It is also an occasion to be reborn, to unlearn and relearn; in a way to rediscover and rejuvenate. The Institute and the profession have made steady advances in terms of recognition, multidisciplinary expertise and professional excellence and on this auspicious day ICSI re-dedicates itself to its professional values, achieve greater heights and prepare itself robustly for future challenges. President, ICSI also briefed about the history of the Institute and acknowledged the great contribution of the Past Presidents and Past Secretaries of the ICSI in its successful 48 years of Nation Building.

ICSI launches centre of excellence in Kolkata: Spread across 1.5 acres, the centre will be completed in two years

On the occasion, Ms. Mamta Binani announced that Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) will be launching its centre of excellence in Rajarhat, Kolkata where ICSI has bought 1.5 acres of land for the centre, which is scheduled to be completed within two years. President, ICSI thanked the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Ms. Mamta Banerjee for allotment of the land to ICSI, during her presidential address at the 48th CS Day.

Ms Binani said, “Given the need for good Corporate Governance in today's corporate world, the demand of company secretaries is increasing day by day. The Institute and the profession has taken positive strides in terms of recognition, multidisciplinary expertise and professional excellence and on this auspicious day ICSI re-dedicates itself to its professional values, achieve greater heights and prepare itself robustly for future challenges.”
