40TH NATIONAL CONVENTION OF COMPANY SECRETARIES: VALEDICTORY ADDRESS DELIVERED BY DR. ANAND DESHPANDE, FOUNDER, CHAIRMAN  AND MANAGING DIRECTOR, PERSISTENT SYSTEMS LTD. ON 6TH OCTOBER, 2012 AT AAMBY VALLEY, PUNE

Dr Anand Deshpande, Founder, Chairman and Managing Director, Persistent Systems Ltd. delivered the Valedictory Address at the 40th National Convention of Company Secretaries that concluded today at Aamby Valley, Pune. He said that the entrepreneur and company secretary should work together and referred to the five attributes such as team effort, advocacy of entrepreneurs with regulatory aspects, initiatives towards acceleration of growth, leveraging of technology and corporate governance. Referring to the growth of small and medium enterprises, he said that the company secretaries should work with smaller companies also. They should work with companies from the stage of incorporation and guide them to develop and grow.

Mr. Saji Cherian, Head-Listing, Compliance and Corporate Services, MCX Stock Exchangein his address referred company secretaries as expert practitioners of corporate law and governance. He said company secretaries hold unique position in inculcating corporate governance as they are the only professionals who have direct access to the Board. CS Nesar Ahmad, President The ICSI, in his address informed about the initiatives of the institute for professional development and said that the responsibility on company secretaries is going to be enlarged in the form of secretarial audit, in certifying annual returns, in acting as insolvency practitioners etc. He emphasised on the independence of company secretary whether practising or in whole-time employment. He appreciated the regulators especially Ministry of Corporate Affairs for the confidence reposed on the Company Secretaries Profession in making them to be the part of the regulatory reform initiatives.

CS S N Ananthasubramanian, Vice President, The ICSI summarized the proceedings of the inaugural and four technical sessions.

CS B Narasimhan, Council Member, The ICSI and Chairman, Convention Organising Sub Committee delivered the welcome address.

An Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the ICSI and Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies, Noida, Symbiosis International University. The MOU provides for MBA Degree programs for the members of ICSI, academic programmes for students of ICSI, collaborative personal contact programmes, joint research programme etc.

Earlier, CS Mahavir Lunavat, Chairman, WIRC of ICSI introduced the Chief Guest.
