Swami Vivekananda Jayanti celebrates the birthday of Swami Vivekananda. Swami Vivekananda's birthday falls on the Paush Krishna Saptami, the 7th day after the full moon day in the Hindu month of Paush. Therefore the date varies from year to year. In 2011, the date of the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda is on January 26 as per traditional Hindu calendar. According to the English calendar or the generally used Indian Calendar, Swami Vivekananda was born on January 12, 1863.

Numerous programs are organized in

India

and in several countries around the world on the day.

Saints of Sanatana Dharma never sought blind followers. Their sole aim was to initiate a discussion on a particular topic. They wanted each individual to arrive at a conclusion through a healthy debate and contemplation. They wanted each individual to realize his/her potential. Swami Vivekananda was one such modern saint who kindled the passion of search for knowledge in the minds of people.

The ideal way to remember or honor a saint is by understanding his/her teachings. Swami Vivekananda has given his valuable thoughts on several topics. It is for us to pick up these pearls of wisdom and contemplate and apply it in our daily life. This can be done not just on his birthday but on all days of the year.

Swami Vivekananda on How to control the mind?

The first lesson in controlling the mind is self awareness; sit for some time and let the mind run on. Let the monkey mind jump as much as he can; you simply wait and watch.

(Swami Vivekananda used to compare a restless mind to a to a restless monkey which is stung by the scorpion of jealousy, drunk with the wine of desire, and possessed by the demon of pride.)

Give the monkey the rein; many hideous thoughts may come into it; you will be astonished that it was possible for you to think such thoughts. But you will find that each day the mind’s vagaries are becoming less and less violent, that each day it is becoming calmer. In the first few months you will find that the mind will have a great many thoughts, later you will find that they have somewhat decreased, and in a few more months they will be fewer and fewer, until at last the mind will be under perfect control; but we must patiently practice every day.

Swami Vivekanand thoughts on Vedanta

Vedanta does not destroy the world, but it explains it; it does not destroy the person, but explains him; it does not destroy the individuality, but explains it by showing the real individuality. It does not show that this world is vain and does not exist, but it says, “Understand what this world is, so that it may not hurt you..” The theme of the Vedanta is to see the Lord in everything, to see things in their real nature, not as they appear to be.

The Vedanta teaches men to have faith in themselves first. As certain religions of the world say that a man who does not believe in a Personal God outside of himself is an atheist, so the Vedanta says, a man who does not believe in himself is an atheist. Not believing in the glory of our own soul is what the Vedanta calls atheism. . . .There is neither man nor woman or child, nor difference of race or s*x, nor anything that stands as a bar to the realization of the ideal, because Vedanta shows that it is realized already, it is already there.

Biography

A spiritual genius of commanding intellect and power, Vivekananda crammed immense labor and achievement into his short life, 1863-1902. Born in the Datta family of Calcutta, the youthful Vivekananda embraced the agnostic philosophies of the Western mind along with the worship of science.

At the same time, vehement in his desire to know the truth about God, he questioned people of holy reputation, asking them if they had seen God. He found such a person in Sri Ramakrishna, who became his master, allayed his doubts, gave him God vision, and transformed him into sage and prophet with authority to teach.

After Sri Ramakrishna's death, Vivekananda renounced the world and criss-crossed India as a wandering monk. His mounting compassion for India's people drove him to seek their material help from the West. Accepting an opportunity to represent Hinduism at Chicago's Parliament of Religions in 1893, Vivekananda won instant celebrity in America and a ready forum for his spiritual teaching.

For three years he spread the Vedanta philosophy and religion in America and England and then returned to India to found the Ramakrishna Math and Mission. Exhorting his nation to spiritual greatness, he wakened India to a new national consciousness. He died July 4, 1902, after a second, much shorter sojourn in the West. His lectures and writings have been gathered into nine volumes.
