19 February 2013Service tax becomes due from the date when turnover limit exceeds or from the date when service tax number is obtained by service provider? For e.g. if turnover limit exceeds in the month of may2012 for a.y 2012-13 but service tax no. is obtained by service provider in january 2013..then from which date service tax becomes due?

As per service tax provision service tax registration should be taken when the turn over is 9 lakh or more and tax liablility arises when T.O. exceeds 10 lakhs.
In your case tax liability arises in May 12. Penalty will be imposed for taking late registration.
