Rent paid in two different cities

Tax queries 197 views 1 replies

Hi,
I have moved pune in June 2015 before that I was living in Gurgaon and paying house rent there .But still my wife is staying in Gurgaon in same rented accommodation.

Can you please let me know the policy to declare rent if different cities .
1. How more long I can declare Gurgaon rent as my wife is still staying there.
2. Can I parallelly declare pune rent where I am currently staying .

Thanks

Vivek

I did not understand your question correctly. But if you want to get HRA exemption for the rent paid then there is not much of problem as you can mention the rent for gurgaon for the period you lived there and mention the rent paid when you moved to Pune. You can not declare both the rents simultaneously which you mentioned. HRA is applicable for the taxpayer not on his dependents such as wife or parents. So, declare the rent paid for yourself only i.e. for the period you lived in Gurgaon and the period you lived in Pune.

Please note that the HRA is the least of following.

* Actuall HRA received

* Rent paid less 10% of (Basic+DA)

* 50% of (Basic+DA) if living in 4 metros while 40% if living in other cities

Hope this helps
