Dear Friends,

Does educational expenses which qualifies deduction u/s. 80C (Rs.12000/- per child upto a maximum of two children) cover expenses incurred in connection with:

  • Purchase of Dress Materials (Uniform)
  • Purchase of Text Books & Note Books
  • Purchase of Shoes
  • Cost of conveyance

Or will be limited only to admission fee or the term fee (Tuition Fee)?

Please Clarify.

hello sir 80C Covers tution fees admission fees only
Hi In Circular No.8/2007 dt. 5-12-2007, it is clarified that ; Tuition fees, whether at the time of admission or thereafter, paid to any university, college, school or other educational institution situated in India, for the purpose of full-time education of any two children of the employee. Full-time education includes any educational course offered by any university, college, school or other educational institution to a student who is enrolled full-time for the said course. It is also clarified that full-time education includes play-school activities, pre-nursery and nursery classes. It is clarified that the amount allowable as tuition fees shall include any payment of fee to any university, college, school or other educational institution in India except the amount representing payment in the nature of development fees or donation or capitation fees or payment of similar nature Doesn't it mean any all payment except the payment in nature of development fees or donation or capitation fees, should be allowable as deduction under tuition fees in Sec 80 C. I think it has to looked again what is the right interpretation.
it is excluding donation/development fees towards any 2 children of the assessee - That means only tution fees should be consider not anything else.
Hi, the deduction for education expenses U/s 80C clearly states "Tuition fees paid", hence it only pertains to fees paid for education, not even hostel or development fees paid. cost of books and shoes, etc do not come under the purview of tuition fees, hence not deductible U/s 80 C.
Dear All, Thanks for your valuable feed back.] Regards S.Jeyendran

its ok, your thinking is very good. Keep it up.
Only tution fee of 2 children is covered in section 80c,Nothing else.
Is payment of Tution Fees for the period April08-June08, eligible for deduction u/s 80C in A.Y. 2008-09
80C covers only tuition fees paid to any university, college, school or other educational institution situated in India, for the purpose of full-time education of any two children of the employee.
Only tution fees is eligible for Section 80C. Now there is no cieling of Rs. 12,000/-. You can claim Upto Rs. 1.00 lacs provided you have no other eligible investments in Section 80C.
