Query about writing on question paper

Are students allowed to write on the question paper ? Not words but things like tick marks or crossing a question, underlining or marking with dots and circles. Is this allowed ? I need to marks questions so that I make no mistakes in a hurry. I am going to take IPCC exam this nov
