Hi one of my friend filed the online return with in the time but he forget to send the acknowledgment to the department with in 120 days.Dept rejected the return what will he do now ? can he file a revised return ?

the same problem of my freind, he filed revised return.

When the original ITR was defective and rejected, one cannot file revised ITR. He will have to send fresh original ITR again, and send the ITR-V acknowledgement within 120 days.

Its invalid return but not Defective return ...filled Fresh return again u/s 139

Yes he should file fresh return as if he didn't file return previously

Dear Just wait & watch, Every Year department gives opportunity for again sending return which are not send within 120 days of filing of return. These opportunity comes in March month till yet, now see this time when this opportunity come. thanks Vikas Garg

In my case i filed itr for AY 2011-12 which is showing rejected, itr is of refund

so refund is also pending, what should be done in this case

In this case you have to file revise return by selecting revise return option in utility. However this return shall be treated as original return by income tax dept. Refer cpc guidelines, it is clearly mentioned therein.

In this case when you will try to file the return, it will show that return is already filed please file the revise return. So as power my suggestion, file the revise return and send both acknowledgment together.
