How to Register Digital Signature for eFiling of Income Tax

A digital signature authenticates electronic documents in a similar manner a handwritten signature authenticates printed documents. This signature cannot be forged and it asserts that a named person wrote or otherwise agreed to the document to which the signature is attached. The recipient of a digitally signed message can verify that the message originated from the person whose signature is attached to the document and that the message has not been altered either intentionally or accidentally since it was signed. Also, the signer of a document cannot later disown it by claiming that the signature was forged. In other words, digital signatures enable the "authentication" and “non-repudiation” of digital messages, assuring the recipient of a digital message of both the identity of the sender and the integrity of the message.

A digital signature is issued by a Certification Authority (CA) and is signed with the CA's private key. A digital signature typically contains the: Owner's public key, the Owner's name, Expiration date of the public key, the Name of the issuer (the CA that issued the Digital ID), Serial number of the digital signature, and the digital signature of the issuer. Digital signatures deploy the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology.

If you file electronically using digital signature you do not have to submit a physical copy of the return. Even if you do not have a digital signature, you can still e-File the returns. However, you must also physically submit the printed copy of the filled up Form along with the copy of the Provisional Acknowledgement Number of your e-Return.

Here is the procedure to register the Digital Signature with Income Tax department website for eFiling of Income Tax Returns.

THANKS SIR

Sir, I have followed the registration process as suggested and was able to proceed further. But, afterwards another error occurs-"The certification chain is too short. It should consist of at least 2 certificates. please click here +GenerateCertificateChain to resolve this issue".

When I read the instructions on how to generate the certificate chain, it only talks about .pfx file and DSC using USB teken. Please advice how to generate certificate chain for USB Tken.

Yes sir i agree with Mr. Jain. I am also facing the same problem the certification chain is too short. I am not able to file any return using digital signature because of the said problem and i have even sent ITR - V to banglore 10 days ago but still have not received any email from them regarding my receipt.

But I have received a confirmation of the postal receipt of ITR-V in another case. Please check the email ID which you have used for filing the ITR. Digital signature problem is still unresolved.

I think procedure for sending ITR-V is not correct as it does not allow sending ITR-V by oridary post so one has no proof that it has been sent. Even if ITR-V some how gets misplaced in IT Department , the sender can not prove that he/she sent it. Kindly comment.

Sorry for mistake in my previous post. I wrote "as it does not allow sending ITR-V by oridary post". It should say "as it only allows sending ITR-V by ordinay post & not by registered/spped post or courier".

when i go for income tax return filling with digital signature. registation of digital certificate required and when i do registere the signature system show three validation error-1.digital certificate is not issued in the name of company.2.your name in the certificate does not match with key persons/partner/member information if filed earlier.23.if u are filling the first return of the company, you have to submit ITR-V.my company director has been changed whether this is the reason for errors.

for individual in form n21 . cost upto rs 375

While registering Digital Sign for e-filing i got following error.

" Can not read certificate keystore file (xxxxxxx.pfx). The file is not either in PKCS#12 format(.p12 or PFX) or is corrupted or password is invalid"

* I have not entered any password.

Please help me to solve.

For password you need to check with the provider of your digital signature. It is usually something like 123 or 1234 .

But it could be different also..just check.

Also note that password for USB token can be different from the password for the digital signature.

Sometimes it the name in the income tax digital signature is not as in PAN, it can create problems while e-filing.

Overall efiling using digital signature is extremely better than going through the hassle of submitting ITR-V to Bangalore.

Also, just for the information of those who come across this post now, it has been mabdatory to use PAN encrypted Digital Signature for Income tax purposes.

Thus if the DSC is not PAN based, you will face problems.

Dear sir,

I am working for a company to file 15CA online urgently. The director who is authorised to give digital signature in income tax site got recently passed away. the company has one more directorof whose digital signature has to be registerd in IT site for efiling purpose. i could find any option to change the signatory and his digital signature. please give your valid suggestions.

Thank you
