6 digit challan serial number - self assessment tax

Hi Everyone!

Got a problem because of which I could not file my return on time and now I have to pay interest because of just 1 hour.

I paid my self assessment tax on 11PM, 31st July, 2013. The challan serial number given to me is of 6 digits. When I enter this number in ITR form (Excel), it does not accept the number and asks me to feed 5 digits only. I also tried entering last 5 digits of the number. But, the remaining 5 digits start with a 0 and so number becomes 4 digits automatically on excel sheet. Please help.

I wonder why they have given me 6 digit instead of 5?

Use quick e-file feature, instead of an excel or X M L upload.

date has been extended to 5th august...no need to pay interst

No any govt circular issue for 5 th Aug date.

Thank you Mr. Satish for telling me Quick e-File feature. I did not know about it.

But, the problem still remains. I tried to Quick e-File and I see only Adavance Tax that I paid in Jan. 2014. I cannot see the self assessment tax that I paid in July, 2014. Should I wait for 1-2 days and try again?

you have to feed the details of self assessment tax challan as deposited by you in the quick file itr option !!!!

But same happens there too. I have 6 digit challan serial number and only 5 digits are allowed. :(

Anyone have any ideas? Has anyone got this problem before? I searched Google and noone seems to have problem like this. I tried to view challan status inquiry on tin website and they also do not provide me info about my tax payment because I have 6 digits and they allow only 5.

Feels so bad. Why they have given me 6 digits when they do not support it.

try to received the income tax act code and then try for it

In taxes paid sheet, you need to input the BSR code, challan No, date of payment and the amount remitted. This will enable the self assessment paid option and accordingly taxes payable becomes nil, if you have paid full amount. Thus the personal information sheet gets updated as nil tax payable. Once done you can press the submit button. Hope this option helps you in filing the return.

For non corporates the bank allots BSR 7 digit code, challan 5 digit code for self assessment tax paid. Can you please check whether you selected the correct options in ITNS 280 i.e., other than companies option ?

Thank you for the information Satish Sir.

But, I can confirm and I have checked the challan report that I selected 0021 (Income tax other than companies), ITNS 280 & Self Assessent Tax 300. So, that is not an issue.

Issue is I got 6 digit challan number instead of 5. I called income tax department (efiling) customer care but no help. They told me to contact tin nsdl website itself. I called them too, but they do not give "talk to customer care executive" option.

I consulted with my CA and he said that adding last 5 digits of challan number on ITR4 form should not be a problem because income tax department system has all the details already and adding ITR4 form income tax payment details is just a formality. Their system matches the tax paid amount with the amount they have in actual.

Anyways, as interest is already charged, I will wait for 10 more days to do quick e-filing OR Java utility to e-file. Because these 2 options have filling of tax payments automatically. My last tax payment still does not show on on those utlities so my CA asked to wait for 7 days.

Wait n watch...Chek 26AS IN THAT SEE SELF TAX DETAILS...WITH BSR CODE N CHALLN SR NO ...OK

Problem is fixed. I got a call from bank that they are fixing all the challan numbers which have 6 digits. They will be giving 5 digits soon so that return can be filed.
