I have recd a mail informing me that -

Government of India today 7 April 09  announced imposition of a flat 5% tax on all NRIs over their world-wide income. Income that is already taxed in India has been kept out of the purview to avoid double taxation. No double taxation benefits would be available for this 5% tax, meaning even if you are paying tax on your income in a country with which India has double taxation agreement, the benefit would not be allowed against this 5% tax. All those Indians who are holding Indian Passports and have been out of the country for more than 180 days during the year are under this requirement. Income proof would have to be submitted in form of employer certificates, foreign tax filings etc.

Is this true? Can anyone please quote any reference (sections, circulars or rules)

Thanks,

Anil.

This news is not supported by any link to circular, notification issued by The Income Tax Deptt of India, and therefore can not be relied upon. As of my information the ITD has not issued any such kind of notification till date.

Mr. Chauhan is right...

There is no supporting evidence with regards to this email. I have also received the same and found that it is a hoax and therefore you MUST send a reverse email notifying all of your friends and family regarding the same
