Here is Geetika, the AIR 1 holder of CA IPCC. This bubbly and super talented girl from Bangalore has made not only her family but the whole city proud! She loves dancing and singing and follows it as her passion. Being a daughter of Chartered Accountants and being from a science background, she has broken the myth that good students don't opt for commerce as a career by being a brilliant student throughout. Read her story to find out about her journey and what her future plans are.

Geethika, first of all, I would like to congratulate you on behalf of CAclubindia for your success!!

Thank you so much Ma'am, thank you!!

So how does it feel to be AIR 1 in CA IPCC?

It feels really good. I didn't expect it. So it came as a pleasant surprise. I'm feeling like I'm on top of the world.

What was your first reaction when you saw your result?

I didn't actually see my results. The ICAI President called my father and my father called me. So before I could check my results, he told me that I was AIR 1. I couldn't actually believe it for the first few minutes that I was the topper. Its still sinking in slowly.

What was your parents' reactions as you said that your father got to know your results first?

They were very very excited. They were extremely happy and proud of me I think.

Definitely they are! So, Geethika tell me, what was your study plan, strategy and time table for IPCC, and how did you carry it out?

See, the thing is, a lot of people ask me the number of hours I study in a day. But, that I feel is a very subjective thing. It varies from person to person. Someone might take maybe 2 hours, someone might take 1 hour and someone might take as long as 5 hours to study a topic. So that is highly subjective. I never used to wake up too early in the morning. I always used to start my day at 8 O'clock and I never used to stay up till late or anything or pull all-nighters or anything of that sort. I used to make sure that I study till max 8 pm and rest of the time I just used to watch TV or go out for a walk and things like that to get my mind off from studies. But the time when I used to study, I used to concentrate and didn't let myself get distracted and gave it my best.

When was the time that you decided that you want to be a CA?

I was a Science student in my 11th and 12th. I did Science from CBSE. So I wasn't too sure actually. I chose Science. I wasn't to sure about it. Both my parents, actually are Chartered Accountants so they told me "Why don't you look at this?" They gave me a kind of introduction to it and they told me what we could do in the coming years and i was extremely convinced by the prospects of it so i picked it up and yes, now i find the subjects really interesting and I'm looking forward.

Geethika, being a science student, did you face any hurdles in switching your entire field as you did not have the Commerce background during your schooling? Or did you face any problems in any particular subject due to this?

No, not really. For my CPT, I had a very strong foundation laid. I had attended coaching classes for Accounts. It was not much of a problem for me. Actually, I think that being based from a science background has really helped me. For example, in the IT paper, being a Computer science student was a lot of help. So, I would say that being from the Science background, instead of pulling me down, it helped me go up.

This is very motivating for the Science students who want to pursue Chartered Accountancy but are apprehensive about it.

Ya, actually I was the topper of my school also with 97.4% in my Board Examinations.

So you have defied the cliche that only Commerce students may pursue CA and science students don't opt for it.

Ya, I know the norm. But it has just acted in the reverse for me.

As you said that your parents, being CAs, were the source of your inspiration. So is there anyone else you would like to give credits to for your success?

Well yeah, my parents are my biggest source of inspiration. They've been extremely supportive and helped me through the whole process. Also, my sister. she has always been there to motivate me. so, I mean my family has played an extremely extremely important part. Another major pillar for me was my coaching class. They have helped me lay down a very strong foundation and have cleared all my concepts. All my teachers helped me reach where I am today.

All India 1st Rank holder of IPCC

You know CA studies can sometime prove to be really hectic so what did you do to relieve stress? Are there any hobbies that you pursue?

See, I'm actually a classically trained Bharatnatyam dancer. I also had a Programme of mine sometime back in December. This is the time when all the classes for CA are going on. We had a lot of practice sessions for that. So, dancing had been very important for me. Apart from that, I sing too. And I watch TV, news and the like.

Okay. So, we have a very versatile and talented topper here. Not someone who is only studious. Thats really nice to know.

Thank you. Thank you!

What are your strategies for ca finals? Since expectations from everyone must be very high now as you are the IPCC topper, what are your plans?

So, I am gonna try my best to come up to the expectations and I would try my best to see those expectations with motivation that would help me and be the guidance force for me. So, ya I will do my best in CA Finals too!!

All the best for your endeavors and what about the articleship? Have you thought how are you going to go about it?

I will need some more time to decide about that, I would be concentrating.

Ok, and what are your plans for future? What do you want to do after CA? Where do you see yourself after 5 years?

I am pursuing B.Com from Bangalore and currently I'm in 2nd Year. Again I am not much sure about that but definitely I would like to pursue something after CA, I just don’t want to stop with CA. I want to do something but I haven’t yet decided it exactly.

Would you like to give some tips to your juniors on how to attempt the exams? What should be the strategies or your mindset when you are attempting the exams? As it happens many times that students prepare well earlier but during the exam, they are not able to perform.

Ya, I would tell you my strategy. Basically, one month before the exams, I did take too much of pleasure. I reduced the no. of hours that I would study. I mostly concentrated on some revision test papers, the past papers, maybe I used to do a little bit of theory. The last one month was a bit relaxing one also. A few days before the exams, I ensured that I will not study, I would just relax; I would cool myself down and I think the most important thing in exam is that maintain your cool as you said that a lot of people lose their cool and are not able to concentrate on the paper so the most important thing would be to maintain your cool and may be if the paper is lengthy, then I think concentration helps me but if its lengthy for me, I know then, its lengthy for everyone else so yes it’s all a very related thing so I think keep your cool at the end of the day!!

Geethika, how big is this achievement for you? What importance does it hold in your life- CA IPCC Topper?

Very big. I mean it’s one of my biggest achievements and I am extremely happy. It was certainly not expected and it has come up like this. So, I am extremely happy.

Any message you would like to give to the future aspiring CA students / juniors?

I would say, study hard and keep your cool and I think the rest of it will happen itself. I guess the students should be Goal oriented. First decide what your aim is and then work towards it diligently and patiently. You will surely get success one day.

It was wonderful talking to you Geetika, I would like to congratulate you again and all the best for your CA Final !!

Thank you so much maam!!
