refers to a twelve-month period which follows the financial year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Financial year begins on 1st April and ends on 31st March of the following year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the standard tax reporting period for individuals and businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Effective_Date\"><\/span>Effective Date<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Introduction of the concept &#8220;Tax Year&#8221; as per <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caclubindia.com\/guide\/income-tax-act-2025-clauses\/\">New IT Act<\/a><\/strong> will be effective from 1st April 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Benefits\"><\/span>Benefits<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This will remove the confusion between Previous Year and Assessment Year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This will also help India fall in line with international standards since many countries follow the concept of a singular tax year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_a_New_Business_or_Source_of_Income_Starts\"><\/span>When a New Business or Source of Income Starts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of a business or profession newly set up, or a source of income newly coming into existence in any financial year, the tax year shall be the period beginning with\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a new business or profession is newly set up or a source of income newly arises within a financial year, then the tax year for that specific income will be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"For_a_New_Business_or_Profession\"><\/span>For a New Business or Profession<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The tax year starts from the date the business or profession is set up.<br>It ends on March 31 of the same financial year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abhinav planning to start his business on 1st September 2026. The tax year for this business will be 1st September 2026 \u2013 31st March 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"For_a_New_Source_of_Income\"><\/span>For a New Source of Income:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The tax year starts from the date when the income first arises.<br>It ends on March 31 of the same financial year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ajay is making a building on his land and planning to start earning rental income from a property starting 1st June 2026. The tax year for this rental income will be June 1, 2026 \u2013 March 31, 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, in such cases, the tax year will not be a full 12 months but will cover the period from the start date to March 31st of that financial year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Comparison_with_Income_Tax_Act_1961\"><\/span>Comparison with Income Tax Act, 1961<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier there are two terms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Previous Year : <\/strong>The year in which income is earned.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Assessment Year :<\/strong> The year following the previous year, when tax is calculated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The draft bill gets rid of this term. There will be no separate assessment year.
