Dear Saritha & Vikas, I am doing self study 4 ca final & using the following reference books.
1)Financial reporting-M.P.Vijaykumar
I found this book extremely useful in topics such as amalgamation, valuation & consolidation. The theory is neatly presented in small sections. After u read the theory part & do problems related thereto, u will understand the topic quite well. The major defect of this book is that it does not cover the entire syllabus. For example, it does not have employees share based payments topic. But I think u can refer our module 4 the topics not covered in this book. This book is very useful for self study purpose.
For accounting standards, I have bought First Lesson in Accounting Standards by M.P.Vijaykumar. Each standard is very well presented with flowcharts, etc. At the end of each accounting standard chapter, a number of practically relevant cases related to that particular standard are given. How the different accounting standards are dealt with in an annual report is discussed by providing a specimen annual report. It also discusses the differences between each accounting standard & the corresponding IFRS.I also got a small pocket book free with this book. This pocket book contains a brief descripttion of all the accounting standards, which shall be very useful for quick revision especially during the day b4 the exam.
2)SFM-S.D.Bala & Pattabhiraman
This is my favourite reference book. I have not read a better reference book than this. Pls check this link for a detailed analysis of this book. http://www.caclubindia.com/forum/book-for-sfm-pattabhi-ram-or-sridhar--117331.asp
3)Management accounting-Institute module
The module for this subject is really good. I had bought paduka for this subject but found it useless. It has got a large number of problems but cant be relied for understanding the topics. Then I began to refer the module & am very satisfied with it upto now(I have not covered that much of the portion & my opinion is based just on reading 3 chapters.) So I advise ur friend to first study from the module. If he finds it hard to understand the concepts by referring the module, then he can think of buying a reference book. But whatever the case may be, pls dont buy paduka which is not at all suitable 4 self study(it can be used only 4 problem solving purpose).
Regards,
Jithin

Financial reporting - D S Rawat & M P Vijay Kumar
.
SFM - A N Shreedhar & SD BALA
.
Cost- Institute modulEs with compilations & SANJAY AGGARWAL
.
Hint : CA Students should not depend upon one book only in a subject.
.
When there are so many good books are available ( fortunately ) in a subject; then definitely STUDENTS should have (buy) them. It will hardly make a difference of Rs. 5000 only.
.
(The cost of failure is much much more than this).
.
A book may be good for general students but it may not be suitable to a particular student ( e.g. language, type font, interest of student himself etc.etc.)
.
One more thing; students "must" exchange books in between them to have regular interaction about studies.
.
Final :
.
DIFFERENT BOOKS ARE LIKE DIFFERENT UNIFORM OF SCHOOLS WITH ONE AND ONLY ONE MOTTO : STUDY, STUDY & STUDY !
