Is tan mandatory?

Others 3521 views 12 replies

Hi,

Iam currently filing my tax returns online. Is it necessary to mention the TAN number of the past employer (within the financial year, of course) on the form? I do not have form 16 or 16 A with me. If I mention just the total salary over the period from various sources, will my claim for refund of TDS (within first bracket) be processed? Can I go ahead or should I wait till I get the forms from my employers? If it goes beyond 31st July, will there be problems filing tax returns then?

Check your Form 26AS

You seem to be a salaried individual. Your concern is whether your employer has deducted any TDS from your salary, and whether you have received the TDS credit in your PAN. The employer is liable to give you Form 16, in which the company's TAN number will be mentioned. Check 26AS to know your tax credit. If your TDS exceeds your tax liability, you will receive refund, as and when the IT dept completes your assessment.

TAN is mandatory. U can get the employer's TAN from ur 26AS statement and then file ur return.

Thank you for your replies. Where can I get my Form 26AS from?
