The telecom department has sought sector regulator Trai’s views on auctioning new bands of airwaves, which are outside the traditional spectrum bands that have been allotted to service providers so far. Spectrum is the airwave on which all mobile communication signals travel and is therefore the lifeline of all telecom operators. With the country’s defence forces vacating spectrum or airwaves for commercial telephony, the department of telecommunications (DoT) now finds itself with new frequency bands.
